Abortifacient essential oils

Although there is not a great body of clinical data to draw from, some essential oils are listed as abortifacient oils, since they are anecdotally identified to induce abortion in some cases.

Please note

The oils listed below should NOT be used to induce the abortion of a fetus, since the abortifacient properties of these oils are linked to their toxic nature, and although it may in some cases bring about an aborted fetus, it would be equally toxic for the mother.

No essential oils should be taken orally or swallowed unless so prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner.

These abortifacient oils also have strong emmenagogue actions, which stimulate the monthly menstrual cycles.

Emmenagogue oils do however not have abortifacient qualities, but since they stimulate the menses they also not be used during pregnancy.

Abortifacient essential oils include

Mugwort (toxic)
Parsley seed (high in apiol and toxic)
Pennyroyal (contains pulegone, isopulegone and menthofuran which is toxic)
Rue (toxic)
Sage (contains thujone)
Sassafras (toxic and carcinogenic)
Savin (toxic)
Thuja (toxic and neurotoxin)
Tansy (toxic and neurotoxin)
Wormwood (toxic and neurotoxin)

All oils listed on the toxic oil page should never be used due to their toxic nature.
