Conjunctivitis, better known as pink eye, is an infection of the outermost layer of the eye.
This is a common infection and usually resolves itself in ten days or so. Symptoms include irritation, redness, itching, burning and tearing, although vision is not affected in any way.
Although bacteria or viruses, dust, sand and smoke can cause this infection, make-up or chlorine can cause irritation of the eye that later leads to infection.
To treat sore itchy eyes, cover them with a compress soaked in cornflower, Chamomile, Marigold or Fennel herbal infusions.
To assist with conjunctivitis you can make a compress with the following:
- 1 drop of Chamomile oil
- 5 ml Witch hazel and mix well.
Add to 30 ml Rosewater and leave for at least 7 hours, strain through a paper coffee filter and use as a compress on the closed eyelids.
