A cough is the body's reaction to an irritation in the respiratory system, whether the irritation lies in the throat, lungs or bronchial tubes.
There are different characteristics of a cough that help in the diagnosis of the underlying illness. Coughs help to expel mucus, bacteria and other irritating substances from the respiratory tract.
Usually a cough signals an associated viral or bacterial infection, such as a cold. It can also be a respiratory infection such as whooping cough or pneumonia.
Dust, cigarette smoke or pollution in the air can also irritate. Coughing that is persistent and that develops without reason is usually caused by a more serious illness such as cancer or tuberculosis.
