Frostbite causes the skin to become pale, cold and numb from poor circulation after exposure to the cold.
Typically the fingers, toes and ears are first affected, however parts of the face are also prone mainly the nose and chin. Restoring circulation to a frostbitten area by warming up is generally painful and it is common for redness and swelling to occur.
This should be done slowly with warm not hot water. Frostbite occurs as a result of lengthy exposure of tissues to extreme cold. This damages the blood vessels and tissues due to poor circulation.
Frostbite occurs more in areas with inhibited circulation as a result of tight clothing or shoes. Getting wet or damp predisposes the area to the effects of cold. Children and the elderly are most susceptible to the effects of cold.
Use especially the Pine and Cypress oil family in a massage oil for circulation problems. The essential oils should be diluted in a carrier oil.
At the end of a day out in the snow, rub a little Grape seed oil with a few drops of Pine oil added onto the feet. Neat Lavender oil could be applied to the patches of affected skin.
